As the blossoms of August and September morph into the achenes and diaspore of October, I still have plenty of material to keep me busy. Before I show you what I am writing about, let me drop back and clean up my botanical presumptions. Most of you understand that flowers are the reproductive systems that insure that our park will be adorned by the next generation of plants. Once our flowers are fertilized, the seeds that result are contained in a variety of dispersal mechanisms. Two terms I slipped in on you, achenes and diaspore are just two of the multitude of dispersal mechanisms that have evolved over the millennia.
Keep an eye out for these elegant containers of the progeny of this year’s flowers.
