Betula nigra (black birch, river birch or water birch)

This beautiful ornamental tree, The River Birch, is one of the few heat tolerant birches. As the name implies, it is most happy near but not in swamps and alongside rivers especially where it has full-sun or part shade exposures for the leaves. The roots however, prefer cool shaded spots. The Genus, Betula, is derived from the Latin word, “to shine.”
