This interesting tree just “popped up” in the Wet Meadow in Gallup Park. This tree is part of the Rose Family and is a favorite for bees and other insects. I love the red stems (called petioles) and the white spots (lenticels) on the branches.
The Chokeberry will produce red berries that turn purple as they mature. The berries are very astringent but were a large part of the diet for Native Americans.
